As your home shifts over the years, stress can travel from the substrate to your tile assembly. Traditionally, a slip sheet is applied to the substrate, followed by a mortar bed with wire reinforcement. This method, used for over 100 years, allows your home to shift through the seasons without causing tile cracks. The slip sheet, not bonded to the substrate, enables the tile assembly to “slip” over the stress. However, this method requires a mortar bed of at least ¾” which may raise the floor elevation, sometimes causing issues with modern homes’ low-set doors. Alternative modern methods include liquid-applied crack isolation membranes or uncoupling membranes, which provide minimal elevation build-up while protecting the tile assembly.
